Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Research printed in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Individuals buying such medications must be cognizant of the risk of fast weight regain when the medication ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.

The Reason for the Quick Rebound

Experts propose the mode of action of the injections accounts for the amplified weight return.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement means hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered life-long.

This opinion is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense return of appetite.

"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

The struggle is compounded if users have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures show that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among females than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers caution that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
